A study published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology: attitudes and Social Cognition (Journal of Personality and Social Psychology: Attitudes and Social Cognition) in 2019 provides a solution. The researchers found that people are more likely to maintain good habits if they regard the process of achieving their goals as "a journey" rather than "reaching their destination".

Szu-Chi Huang and Jennifer Aaker of Stanford Business School argue that people rely heavily on metaphors for thinking about abstract concepts, while our lives remain the same, and seeing the process of achieving our goals as "a journey" may prompt people to reflect on the way they started and the ups and downs along the way. This may make them feel that they have been transformed into people who are good at accomplishing something and make them more likely to maintain these behaviors.

in six studies involving more than 1600 people, the researchers first examined the recent achievement of academic or fitness goals by two groups of more than 400 American college students and faculty. Participants were asked to think about their experience of achieving their goals-"completing a journey" or "reaching their destination". It turns out that those who see the goal as the completion of the journey not only express a strong desire to continue to act related to the goal, but actually do so (for example, fitness itinerary groups are more likely to sign ongoing fitness programs).

in the subsequent study, the researchers further revealed the internal mechanism of this effect. The researchers asked 265 dieters to set their daily calorie intake targets and tracked their intake over a seven-day period. After the diet ended, those who thought their achievements were the end of a journey indicated that they were more likely to continue dieting. And importantly, this person also has a greater sense of personal growth.

another study involved a 14-day walking program with a goal of 100000 steps, and the results also found that journey metaphors encouraged participants to behave well after reaching their goals, rather than showing beneficial behavior when they were close to the goal.

In the graduation interview, participants were encouraged to use the metaphor of journey or destination to describe their qualifications. Six months later, members of the journey metaphor group were more likely to use what they had learned in the course.
